Snøhetta’s Busan Opera House Is Taking Shape
A New Cultural Horizon
Designed as a move away from the idea of opera as an exclusive institution, Snøhetta’s Busan Opera House reimagines performance space as open, interactive, and truly for everyone. More than a cultural venue, it becomes a shared civic environment - welcoming daily activity, spontaneous encounters, and collective experiences.
Set on the reclaimed waterfront of Busan’s North Port, the opera house invites visitors up through a gentle slope and an oculus to a public rooftop landscape. This walkable, fully accessible roof returns the building’s footprint to the city, offering sweeping views of the mountains and ocean.
Construction is progressing rapidly. With the main structure and façade framework complete, work now focuses on façade installation, interiors, and landscaping. The major construction is set to be completed in late 2026, with opening planned for 2027. It will become the first opera house in South Korea’s second-largest city.
