Manifattura Tabacchi Verona
Strategic urban regeneration

2019–

Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Architecture

Introduction

The area of the old tobacco factory (Manifattura Tabacchi) in Verona is situated at a strategically important location of the Italian city, on the axis linking the city center to the Verona Fair (Veronafiere). Therefore, a pedestrian bridge and a public plaza in the South of the area will connect to the fair. And a linear parc in the North completes the link to the city's railway station and to the city center. The program for the regeneration of the 37 000 m² site comprises hotels, restaurants, a food court, shops, and offices. The design concept includes the regeneration of existing buildings and newly built volumes as well as public spaces, green roofs and courtyards.

The façade of the listed manifattura building will be a chess pattern like double façade reminding of the former structure and dimensions. The factory hall's origins date back to the 1930s. The structure was partly rebuilt and expanded in the 1960s. An old chimney will also be a reminder of the industrial past. An excavated fortress from the 1850s will be included in the design as visible archaeological monument.
