Čoarvemátta nominated for Northern Norwegian Architecture Prize

Čoarvemátta, the new shared facility for the Sámi National Theater Beaivváš, the Sámi High School, and the Reindeer Herding School in Kautokeino, has been nominated for the Northern Norwegian Architecture Prize (Nordnorsk arkitekturpris). The prize, organized by Nord-Norges Arkitektforening, celebrates outstanding architecture in Northern Norway and highlights projects that combine cultural significance with innovative design.

Designed by Snøhetta in collaboration with 70°N Arkitektur, and artist Joar Nango, Čoarvemátta draws inspiration from traditional Sámi building traditions and handicraft. The name is a combination of the Sámi words čoarvi (horn) and mátta (root), referring to the strongest part of the reindeer antler often used in traditional Sámi crafts.

The building’s form pays tribute to Sámi heritage while offering modern facilities for education and performance. With a size of 7,200 m², the project integrates architecture, landscape, and cultural symbolism, standing as a landmark in the Arctic region.

The award ceremony will take place on 28 November 2025 in Tromsø.
